Although it is certainly not required, some understanding of the different vineyard designations helps make your tour of the wine country more enjoyable. The vineyard areas fall into distinctive geographic areas, known as appelations, and are designated as such by the Federal Government. Specifics of topografy, climate and soil define each region and import certain characteristics to the grapes grown under those conditions.A winemaker is permitted to include the name of his applelation only if 85% of the wine comes from that particualar area. While this practice does not guarantee quality per se, it does insure the consumer that at least some standards will have been met in the grape-growing and wine making processes.
Look for these appelations on labels and feel free to ask tasting room personel what characteristics of the wine are unique to the to that certain area. Most winery employees are very happy to pass on helpful information.
